1953 - The first woman to fly faster than the speed of sound, Jacqueline Cochran,                      piloted an F-86 Sabrejet over California at an average speed of   

               652.337 miles-per-hour. 

2007 : A four hundred pound gorilla named Bokito escaped from its holding area at                 the Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands. The eleven-year-old 

              gorilla climbed out of its enclosure and injured several people before                                 zookeepers were able evacuate the zoo and sedate him with a dart.

Transistor: The transistor was invented in 1947 by three American physicists at the Bell Telephone Laboratories, 

John Bardeen, William Shockley, and Walter Brattain. The three men received the 1956 Physics Nobel Prize for 

their joint invention.
